“TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES FOR GLACIER TRAVEL”

SUMMARY

Join us for a weekend of learning about the snow and glacial environment in the mountains near Blue River. This clinic is great for developing the skills to become a ski mountaineer or summer glacier climber.

  • snow travel skills
  • summer snow and glacier safety
  • anchor construction and climbing rope use
  • rope team travel procedures for the Glaciers
  • emergency training in crevasse rescue
  • emergency training in self arrest on snow

ITINERARY

Four wheel drive vehicles get us close to treeline to begin a short hike to set up a tent basecamp for the weekend. On Saturday afternoon, we head up to a summer snowfield to demonstrate and practice snow travel skills using the techniques of mountaineers and skiers. The Saturday session includes routefinding, footwork and step kicking, ice axe use, and self arrest on snow, harness use, and anchor building in snow. Our skill development approach to teaching lets you progress at your own pace and build confidence without being overwhelmed with new content.

Sunday we head up to the glacier for the day. We build on the harness and rope work from the previous day and introduce rope team procedures and tactics to maximize safety on glaciers. We progress up to a crevasse area or snow lip to demonstrate and practice rope team crevasse rescue. Demonstrations can be made for rescue of an unroped victim, and self rescue from a crevasse fall. The day may include an ascent of a snow and scramble summit.

Note that ice climbing and crampon use is beyond the scope of this clinic, but we plan to offer this training at a later date.
