What to Bring for Chalet Hiking


  • Backpack with 60 litre capacity
  • Compact daypack
  • Sleeping bag good to +5 degrees C
  • Water bottle
  • Camera, film, accessories in a waterproof bag
  • Garbage bag (strong bag with closure)
  • Optional items: binoculars, field guide books, pocket knife, whistle, cell phone


  • Boots, should have ankle support and be waterproofed with silicone, wax, or a product recommended by the shop that sold the boots. Low cut running shoes or low cut trekking or approach shoes will usually leave you with a greater risk of ankle sprain, and cold, wet feet on most of the hikes we do
  • Socks plus two pairs of spares
  • Lightweight comfortable footwear for evenings
  • Long pants (synthetic or wool is better than cotton)
  • Spare long underwear or pants
  • Two short sleeve and one long sleeve shirt
  • Pile jacket and/or warm sweater
  • Rain pants and rain jacket
  • Sunglasses
  • Sun hat
  • Warm hat
  • For when cold weather days are expected - wool or synthetic hat (toque),
  • gloves or mittens, warm jacket
  • Gaiters (optional)


  • Personal prescriptions and medications
  • Sunscreen SPF 15+
  • Insect repellant
  • Toothbrush and personal toiletries
  • Blister kit for feet
  • One or two Trekking Poles
